I love to read! It is the one thing that will take you away from your problems, if only for a little while. I do not usually read a best seller unless I can get it on sale. I have some good friends I share my books with and they send theirs my way. I especially like, Sue Grafton, Dean Koonz,Ann Rule, Ann Rice, Lawrence Sanders,James Patterson,John Saul,Patricia Cornwell, Tammi Hoag and most enjoyed by me is James M. Cain. Thank you for the Librarians of the world, one of whom was my best friend growing up.

I have one more comment that has to do with bookwise. My site is focused on recommending books, not creating a generic bookstore. If you could talk to bookwise about building a sites around specific recommended books-- about 200-300 it might be better than a store. Blogs which include items for sale are not going to be structured the same as a generic bookstore, nor are most blogs going to need something like what Bookwise is describing. What I need to have is a recommendation style page which will feature-- click on the book get my comments plus picture.
An improved Amazon style picture link box. I would much rather not get sent to Powells or an affiliate site. A bookstore structure for blogs.

I am thinking of it in terms of waste not content. Lets say a celebtrity has published a print run of 10,000 books and they go into the bookstore and the book is so terrible that they only sell 1000 copies and the book goes out of print.

This happens regularly. It is quite wasteful. Hopefully, things like print on demand and some of the newer technical fixes will get it right so books aren't overproduced, and they can be printed whenever someone wants a book on short notice.

Publishers also really need to be more selective. If something is really bad, they should let the author self publish their book these days if they are really determined to foist the book on the world.

The publishing game is still much like roulette, there is no magic formula on which titles will succeed. Maybe with bestsellers, but not with every day titles.

I went and looked at your blog. It was interesting. I liked the picture of your third graders snack.

If you are going to suggest a product please give a bit more in depth coverage. I have no problems with the idea.

However, without a couple paragraphs about what you are selling or suggesting on "swaptree", I will think this is linkdropping. Putting in a sentence so you can get a product recognized. Be careful doing this, I got a warning from Google about linkdropping-- they called it spam and threatened to cut my account for five days.

Two paragraphs about your experience would be great.

I was amused by your assertion that quite a few books should never have been published. It is undoubtedly true -- but who should decide? I have been unimpressed by bestsellers that the whole world seems to enjoy and some of my all time favorites are works that most people have never heard of.

The fact is that most books, as well as movies, recordings and other artistic works are loved by some people. Every book (well almost every book) has the power to touch someone who is in a particular frame of mind in a particular time of life. The fact that critics (a very low form of life IMHO) attempt to judge a book's worthiness is meaningless. I like what I like and the critics don't have anything to do with that.

So there is no accounting for taste and every book tells a story someone wants to read. Which ones would you declare should not have been published?

Tom Bonner
http://alphatracks.com

After reading a while I realize you're a librarian but some of your readers might enjoy swaptree.

I use it and I've been delighted.

Hi again,

Not sure how long ago you may have looked at BookWise... but we are now supplied by Baker and Taylor.

By early spring we'll have direct access to about 1.5 million titles which is basically their entire inventory.

You're free to set up your business however you choose, whether as a hobby... a way to enrich other's lives through reading, or as an income center.

It's kind of like, what's not to love with their new expanded model.

Oh, all this was revealed on December 1 of this year.

Honestly, if you have read my posts earlier, I am looking at something a bit bigger than a bookstore. I am interested in building something like a social networking site around books with a variety of features. I have looked at the bookstore idea and it wouldn't in terms of time and money pay off well enough financially. It might be fun, but fun doesn't pay the bills.
